The company was established to take over the telephone operations of Southwestern Telegraph and Telephone Co. and the Bell Telephone Company of Missouri, among others. Being a part of the Bell System, Southwestern Bell was at certain times the biggest Bell Operating Company of the 22 AT&T owned. At the present time, the corporate office of the company is based in Dallas, Texas, USA.

Southwestern Bell Telephone Company offers all types of telecommunication services. Southwestern Bell began licensing its name to Conair Corporation after the AT&T breakup and created the Southwestern Bell Freedom Phone.
